Marty is a lonely Bronx butcher, facing middle age without a career or romance. He soon meets and dates a plain schoolteacher. However his friends and his mother mercilessly criticize her. He soon realizes that they are all just holding him back, and that he loves her. Defying them all, Marty phones her and his life really begins.
